in september 2013, 3D printing company3D systemsacquiredthe sugar lab, the husband-and-wife start-up micro-design firm of liz and kyle von hasseln dedicated to creating bespoke, 3D printed edible confections from real sugar. working together, the two parties areredefining and expanding the possibilities of creating sweet indulgences at home, as well as for commercial applications.

the overlap of technology, food and art is so rich, and the potential for customization and innovation is limitless, saidliz von hasseln, cofounder of the sugar lab. existing commercial applications for printable sugar include complex sculptural cakes for weddings and special events that are made possible only with 3D printing, and customizable confections for bake shops and restaurants. continued von hasseln, we see our technology quickly evolving into a variety of flavors and foods, powered by real food printers for professionals and consumers alike and we could not think of a more qualified partner than 3D systems to help make that a reality.

on the occasion ofCES 2014, 3D systems has revealed two food printing appliances that will allow you to produce multidimensional consumable shapes of your sweet culinary creations from custom candies, cake toppers and novelty treats. the development of the devices is the result of the sugar labs long term goal to create a 3D printer that catered to the food and service industry.

the ChefJet will deliver single-color prints; while the more advanced ChefJet Pro will dispatch full color prints. both can produce either sugar or milk chocolate confections, in different flavors that include cherry, mint and sour apple, and will be available to the market later this year.

Just because technology makes it possible doesnt mean its a good idea

Technically this is printing 3D edibles. Printing food is still Jetsons territory. Its cool though and I am very curious if organic brown sugar and vegetable base dyes would work with equal bonding and color intensity as the presumably GMO cane sugar and artificial industrial food dye food shown here.

First, it prints in chocolate. Last I checked that was a food. Second, you can print whatever can be designed. I think that having the ability to print insanely detailed structures will interest any designer.
