ABS print temperature range: 210C 250C (high)

ABS is a great choice for printing plastic automotive parts, moving parts, musical instruments, kitchen appliances, electronic housings, and various toys, like LEGO. It has other applications too, aside from 3D printing. For example, traditional manufacturers use ABS to make plastic wrap, water bottles, and cups, to name a few uses. Despite its popularity for 3D printing, ABS is not the best filament for most home users. This is because it has a high melting point that needs to print on a heated surface, or bed. High Impact Polystyrene, HIPS for short, is a bright, white colored 3D biodegradable material. Its safe to use, meaning it has no harmful effects for users who are in close contact with the filament. For example, as well as knowing what you intend to build, you also need to understand your printers capabilities. Not all 3D printers are able of printing in all 3D materials.

You also need to prepare for trial and error if you plan to experiment with some of the more tricky filaments. Another consideration is the diameter of the filament, either 1.75mm or 3mm. If youre unsure, always opt for 1.75mm as its easier to work with. 3D filament storage is another crucial area to think about. These plastics can absorb moisture from the air which can mess with the printing process. When not in use, a good way to store your 3D filament is to use vacuum bags that have a double zipper line for better, airtight sealing.

And finally, dont allow the cheapest of the cheap filaments tempt you as they could prove to be a false economy. Seriously, low-cost, low-grade 3D printing filaments are more likely to contain chemical impurities. These impurities can result in unsatisfactory printed parts and clogged-up printer nozzles.

The Ultimaker 3 is the first ever dual extrusion printer produced by Ultimaker. Ultimaker has built a loyal following over the past several years because they make exceptionally high quality printers which have a reputation for reliability and dependability. The new Ultimaker 3 is the evolution of all of Ultimakers 3D printing efforts. This printer comes standard with an automatic bed leveling system, which makes printing more effortless than ever before.

The Ultimaker 3 comes with swappable print cores (aka hotends) so that you can experience greater dual extrusion reliability by utilizing specific cores and nozzles for different material types. Currently, two cores are available – AA and BB. The AA core is the core designed for standard materials such asPLAfilament,ABSfilament, etc. The BB core is designed for use with dissolvable support materials such asPVAandHIPS. The AA and BB cores feature nozzles which have customized geometry so that they are optimized for different material types. That means that you can expect greater reliability and fewer failed prints.

Ultimakers innovative dual extrusion system allows you to print with two materials at once so that you can utilize multiple colors or support materials such as HIPS. Dissolvable support materials like PVA allow you to create complex prints without using breakaway supports. The dual extruder on the Ultimaker 3 comes with a unique auto nozzle-lifting system which picks up your secondary print nozzle when it is not in use. This allows the user to achieve cleaner prints without the stringing commonly associated with dual extrusion printers.

The new fans on the Ultimaker 3 are ultra low noise to minimize distraction. The Ultimaker 3 comes with two new radial fans and fan shrouds which greatly improve airflow. The result is superior cooling, better quality bridging, faster printing, and seriously smooth printed parts.

The Ultimaker 3 is a fully open source 3D printer and as such, you can utilize any 3.00mm filament that you desire to use (although we recommend filaments with a diameter below 2.90mm such as ourPRO Serieswhich has a diameter of 2.88mm). Please note that some Ultimaker filaments will now be shipping with NFC chips which can be read by the Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 3 Extended. These NFC chipped spools allow materials settings to be auto populated for you. However, you may still continue to use any 2.85mm, 2.88mm, or 2.90mm filament that you desire to use with your new Ultimaker 3 or 3 Extended.

You can now print remotely over WiFi directly to your Ultimaker 3 via Cura or you can print using a USB stick. Feel free to check on your print at any time using the built in live camera on the Ultimaker 3.

The new build plate on the Ultimaker 3 is designed for active and automatic leveling. A capacative sensor in the print head measures the distance between the bed and the nozzle. The tilt angle is then compensated by adjusting the z height on the first few layers. This leads to better build plate adhesion and more accurate leveling. Additionally, the new build plate is also lighter and stiffer than previous build plates. Lastly, the build plate is heated so that you can print with a plethora of materials.

What are the heat tolerances for 3D printer filaments? – Quora

The exact temperatures a printed part can withstand will depend on the specific polymer blend (which varies by manufacturer), the time scale of the load applied, as well as, shockingly, the

Unfortunately, most materials data youll find doesnt take into account slow-acting effects like creep, or crystallization effects that can be changed by printing conditions or annealing/tempering heat cycles. For example, the basic Vicat or HDT tests raise the temperature too fast to reveal how unreliable PLA is for long-term load-bearing parts. PLA can withstand high short-term stresses but can fail under relatively low stress in a matter of weeks or months. On the other hand, PLA has very complex crystalline phase behavior, and can transition between more or less stable configurations depending on its thermal history. People are just now starting to really experiment with annealing to deliberately modify these material properties. There isnt much public data out there yet.

Heres the basic data, with the caveat that blends vary and you need to perform proper lab testing before doing any real engineering.

ABS: fully load-bearing up to about 60C, creeps over about 80C, rapidly deforms over 105C

PLA (non-annealing blends): only suitable for low stress loads or short-duration loads at any temperature, creeps to brittle rupture (!!) when highly stressed at room temperature, deforms rapidly over 55C

PLA (annealed): may be capable of load-bearing up to 80C, but there isnt enough rigorous test data out there to conclude much with certainty. Some dimensional deformation may occur during annealing.

Nylon: Fully load-bearing to about 40C, creep is unlikely under low stresses (but may or may not occur with high stresses) depending on blend and print settings due to crystallinity, deforms rapidly over about 140C [note: there are a lot of different types of nylon for 3d printing now, YMMV]

PETG and closely-related copolyesters: fully load-bearing to about 50C, creep around 60C, deforms rapidly over about 75C

PC (virgin): fully load-bearing to about 100C, creeps around 120C, deforms rapidly around 150C

PC (easy-printing blends): fully load-bearing to about 75C, creeps around 100C, deforms rapidly around 120C

You can take any of these and add a composite material (like carbon fiber) and significantly raise the acceptable service temperature range. Embedded fibers reduce creep and may (depending on resin/fiber adhesion) strengthen the material in general.

For really high temp service, Stratasys can print Ultem, or you can switch to a different technology such as metal printing.

ColorFabb_HT is a departure from traditional ABS and PLA filaments, in that it is made from a completely new material designed specifically for 3D Printing. In this case, the filament is comprised primarily of Eastman Amphora copolyester to make a filament with odor-neutral processing, higher heat tolerance, and overall higher strength.

In general these filaments do not crack because of heat. They are thermoplastic so the one major thing that all of these filaments have is something of a glass transition phase. This possibly instead of a single melting. For instance, ABS has a glass transition point of 105c. It loses viscosity until increasing as the temperature increases. It does not have to do this linearly or in a regular way. In part because ABS is made up of the separate three other molecule; polybutadiene with styrene and acrylonitrile. The glass transition tells us that the molecule is amorphout or at least semi amorphous. That said if you get ABS to cold it will lose its impact strengt. As it heats to the Glass transition point it softens. This gives it a working temperature range from -20 to 80C. Also crossing over the glass transition point while cooling can see an 8% shrinkage in size. Most of this is onThermoplastic – Wikipediaor rather this is a hub to all most all the plastic you are interested in. More importantly sources have links to MSDS.

In this article i am going to share my views on types 3D Printer Filaments.

3D printing filamentis the thermoplastic feedstock for fused deposition modeling 3D printers.

There are many types of filament available with different properties, requiring different temperatures to print. Filament is available in two standard diameters; 1.75 and 2.85 mm/3 mm.

Based on their properties and uses they are tagged at different prices ranging from $25 to $300 and more for 1kg of spool.

Polylactic acid or PLA is another popular filament that is often compared against ABS. PLA is biodegradable thermoplastic that is derived from renewable resources like cornstarch, sugar cane, tapioca roots and potato starch.First and foremost, itseasy to print with. PLA has a lower printing temperature than ABS, and it doesnt warp as easily, meaning it doesnt require a heating bed (although it definitely helps). Another benefit to using PLA is that it doesnt give off an evil smell during printing. Its generally considered anodorless filament, but many have reported smelling sweet,candy-likefumes.

PVA is easy to print and they make a good support during a printing process for those models with overhangs that is impossible to print without a support.

PolyEthylene Terephthalateor PET is another popular 3D filament from plastic bottles. This is a stable and harmless plastic. It does not produce any funky odors and is totally recyclable.PET filament in its original state is colorless and crystal clear. However, when exposed to heat or cold the material changes its transparency.

Three things 3D printer enthusiasts should keep in mind when using PETG:

. As this has a negative effect on printing, make sure to store the 3D printer filament in a cool, dry place.

during printing, making this 3D printer filament a poor choice for support structures, but good for layer adhesion. (Just be careful with the print bed!)
