A Spanish start-up has created a 3D printer for food, expected to sell in 2014

You may have heard about the possibility of 3D printing your food when Nasa announced that they were exploring the technology, but now a Spanish start-up is looking to bring the same experience to your kitchen in 2014.

Barcelona-based Natural Machines have unveiled the Foodini, a 3D printer for food that is intended to sit next to your microwave and your toaster in your kitchen. The printing apparatus is loaded with any mixture of choice (dough, for example) and then it builds up the food layer by layer.

The device is expected to go on sale mid-2014 for 835, and Natural Machines co-founder Lynette Kucsma said she is hoping that families and restaurants will both want to get their hands on the device.

Retail food stores have shown an interest. They can both print food in-store to sell to consumers as well as sell pre-filled food capsules for consumers to take home to use in their machines, said Kucsma.  It could be an option to buy pre-filled capsules, put them in the machine and print.

The company claims that the Foodini combines technology, food, art, and design but the technology still has many limitations. For a start it cant actually cook the food (youll have to transfer any 3D printed creations to the oven or the pan) and it only works with a single ingredient at a time.

However, it does seem that 3D printing food has its own natural territory – areas of cuisine where its more efficient than human hands. The ability to plug the printer into a computer means that all sorts of novelty patterns become simple to make, and certain foods like pizza (a foodstuff that is essentially a series of layers) look fairly convincing when printed out.

This could be one way forward for the 3D printer: corner a market in convenience foods, and then move into the mainstream. Could 3D printing a pizza be the Pot Noodle equivalent for students of the future? Well, not at Foodinis current prices, but given the industrys current pace of innovation, we might not have too long to wait.

Over the past few decades the oil and natural gas industry has transformed into one of the most technologically advanced industries in the United States. New innovations have reshaped the industry into a technology leader. This section will discuss the role of technology in the evolution of the natural gas industry, focusing on technologies in the exploration and production sector, as well as a few select innovations that have had a profound effect on the potential for natural gas. Beginning in the 1990s, more power generators began to use natural gas to make electricity, causing demand for natural gas to grow substantially.  The natural gas industry has been able to keep pace with growing demand and produce greater amounts of natural gas through technological innovation.  These innovations have enabled the development of natural gas from shale and other formerly unconventional formations that are found in abundance across the United States, as well as development from traditional offshore and onshore formations.  Below is a brief list of some of the major technological advancements that have been made recently:

Advances in the Exploration and Production Sector

Technological innovation in the exploration and production sector has equipped the industry with the equipment and practices necessary to continually increase the production of natural gas to meet rising demand. These technologies serve to make the exploration and production of natural gas more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly. Even as natural gas deposits are increasingly produced from unconventional formations such as shale rock, the exploration and production industry has not only kept up its production pace, but in fact has improved the general nature of its operations, contributing to an unprecedented 39 percent increase in the size of U.S. resources since 2006.

According to a Department of Energy Report, Environmental Benefits of Advanced Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Technology,released in 1999 and still one of the most indepth analyses available as of 2010:

22,000 fewer wells are needed on an annual basis to develop the same amount of oil and gas reserves as were developed in 1985.

Had technology remained constant since 1985, it would take two wells to produce the same amount of oil and natural gas as one 1985 well. However, advances in technology mean that one well today can produce two times as much as a single 1985 well.

Drilling wastes have decreased by as much as 148 million barrels due to increased well productivity and fewer wells.

The drilling footprint of well pads has decreased by as much as 70 percent due to advanced drilling technology, which is extremely useful for drilling in sensitive areas.

By using modular drilling rigs and slimhole drilling, the size and weight of drilling rigs can be reduced by up to 75 percent over traditional drilling rigs, reducing their surface impact.

Had technology, and thus drilling footprints, remained at 1985 levels, todays drilling footprints would take up an additional 17,000 acres of land.

New exploration techniques and vibrational sources mean less reliance on explosives, reducing the impact of exploration on the environment.

Some of the major recent technological innovations in the exploration and production sector include:

The development of seismic imaging in three dimensions greatly changed the nature of natural gas exploration. This technology uses traditional seismic imaging techniques, combined with powerful computers and processors, to create a three-dimensional model of the subsurface layers. 4-D seismology expands on this, by adding time as a dimension, allowing exploration teams to observe how subsurface characteristics change over time. Exploration teams can now identify natural gas prospects more easily, place wells more effectively, reduce the number of dry holes drilled, reduce drilling costs, and cut exploration time. This leads to both economic and environmental benefits.

Fracturing techniques have been used since the 1970s to help increase the flow rate of natural gas and oil from underground formations. CO2-Sand fracturing involves using a mixture of sand proppants and liquid CO2 to fracture formations, creating and enlarging cracks through which oil and natural gas may flow more freely. The CO2 then vaporizes, leaving only sand in the formation, holding the newly enlarged cracks open. Because there are no other substances used in this type of fracturing, there are no leftovers from the fracturing process that must be removed. This means that, while this type of fracturing effectively opens the formation and allows for increased recovery of oil and natural gas, it does not damage the deposit, generates no below ground wastes, and protects groundwater resources.

Coiled tubing technologies replace the traditional rigid, jointed drill pipe with a long, flexible coiled pipe string. This greatly reduces the cost of drilling, as well as providing a smaller drilling footprint, requiring less drilling mud, faster rig set up, and reducing the time normally needed to make drill pipe connections. Coiled tubing can also be used in combination with slimhole drilling to provide very economic drilling conditions, and less impact on the environment.

Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) systems allow for the collection of data from the bottom of a well as it is being drilled. This allows engineers and drilling teams access to up-to-the-second information on the exact nature of the rock formations being encountered by the drill bit. This improves drilling efficiency and accuracy in the drilling process, allows better formation evaluation as the drill bit encounters the underground formation, and reduces the chance of formation damage and blowouts.

Slimhole drilling is exactly as it sounds; drilling a slimmer hole in the ground to get to natural gas and oil deposits. In order to be considered slimhole drilling, at least 90 percent of a well must be drilled with a drill bit less than six inches in diameter (whereas conventional wells typically use drill bits as large as 12.25 inches in diameter). Slimhole drilling can significantly improve the efficiency of drilling operations, as well as decrease its environmental impact. In fact, shorter drilling times and smaller drilling crews can translate into a 50 percent reduction in drilling costs, while reducing the drilling footprint by as much as 75 percent. Because of its low cost profile and reduced environmental impact, slimhole drilling provides a method of economically drilling exploratory wells in new areas, drilling deeper wells in existing fields, and providing an efficient means for extracting more natural gas and oil from un-depleted fields.

The offshore oil and natural gas production sector is sometimes compared to the aeronautics field and NASA due to achievements in deepwater drilling that have been facilitated by state of the art technology. New technology, including improved offshore drilling rigs, dynamic positioning devices and sophisticated navigation systems are allowing safe, efficient offshore drilling in waters more than 10,000 feet deep. Hydraulic Fracturing also called Fracking, or Fracing

Used to free natural gas that is trapped in shale rock formations.  A liquid mix that is 99 percent water and sand is injected into the rock at very high pressure, creating fractures within the rock that provide the natural gas a path to flow to the wellhead.  The fracking fluid mix also helps to keep the formation more poro
us.  Hydraulic fracturing is now widely used, with more than 90 percent of the natural gas wells in the United States having used it to boost production at some time.

The above technological advancements provide only a snapshot of the increasingly sophisticated technology being developed and put into practice in the exploration and production of natural gas and oil. New technologies and applications are being developed constantly, and serve to improve the economics of producing natural gas, allow for the production of deposits formerly considered too unconventional or uneconomic to develop, and ensure that the supply of natural gas keeps up with steadily increasing demand. Sufficient domestic natural gas resources exist to help fuel the U.S. for a significant period of time, and technology is playing a huge role in providing low-cost, environmentally sound methods of extracting these resources.

Two other technologies that are revolutionizing the natural gas industry include the increased use of liquefied natural gas, and natural gas fuel cells. These technologies are discussed below.

Cooling natural gas to about -260F at normal pressure results in the condensation of the gas into liquid form, known as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). LNG can be very useful, particularly for the transportation of natural gas, since LNG takes up about one six hundredth the volume of gaseous natural gas. Advances in technology are reducing the costs associated with the liquification and regasification of LNG. Because it is easy to transport, LNG can serve to make economical stranded natural gas deposits from around the globe for which the construction of pipelines is uneconomical.

LNG, when vaporized to gaseous form, will only burn in concentrations of between 5 and 15 percent mixed with air. In addition, LNG, or any vapor associated with LNG, will not explode in an unconfined environment. Thus, in the unlikely event of an LNG spill, the natural gas has little chance of igniting an explosion. Liquification removes oxygen, carbon dioxide, sulfur, and water from the natural gas, resulting in LNG that is almost pure methane.

LNG is typically transported by specialized tanker with insulated walls, and is kept in liquid form by autorefrigeration, a process in which the LNG is kept at its boiling point, so that any heat additions are countered by the energy lost from LNG vapor that is vented out of storage and used to power the vessel.

The increased use of LNG is allowing for the production and marketing of natural gas deposits that were previously economically unrecoverable. Although it currently accounts for only about 1 percent of natural gas used in the United States, it is expected that LNG imports will provide a steady, dependable source of natural gas for U.S. consumption.

Fuel cells powered by natural gas are an extremely exciting and promising new technology for the clean and efficient generation of electricity. Fuel cells have the ability to generate electricity using electrochemical reactions as opposed to combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity. Essentially, a fuel cell works by passing streams of fuel (usually hydrogen) and oxidants over electrodes that are separated by an electrolyte. This produces a chemical reaction that generates electricity without requiring the combustion of fuel, or the addition of heat as is common in the traditional generation of electricity. When pure hydrogen is used as fuel, and pure oxygen is used as the oxidant, the reaction that takes place within a fuel cell produces only water, heat, and electricity. In practice, fuel cells result in very low emission of harmful pollutants, and the generation of high-quality, reliable electricity. The use of natural gas-powered fuel cells has a number of benefits, including:

Fuel cells provide the cleanest method of producing electricity from fossil fuels. While a pure hydrogen, pure oxygen fuel cell produces only water, electricity, and heat, fuel cells in practice emit trace amounts of sulfur compounds and very low levels of carbon dioxide. However, the carbon dioxide produced by fuel cell use is concentrated and can be readily recaptured, as opposed to being emitted into the atmosphere.

Fuel cells can come in extremely compact sizes, allowing for their placement wherever electricity is needed. This includes residential, commercial, industrial, and even transportation settings.

Fuel cells are completely enclosed units, with no moving parts or complicated machinery. This translates into a dependable source of electricity, capable of operating for thousands of hours. In addition, they are very quiet and safe sources of electricity. Fuel cells also do not have electricity surges, meaning they can be used where a constant, dependable source of electricity is needed.

Fuel cells convert the energy stored within fossil fuels into electricity much more efficiently than traditional generation of electricity using combustion. This means that less fuel is required to produce the same amount of electricity. TheNational Energy Technology Laboratoryestimates that, used in combination with natural gas turbines, fuel cell generation facilities can be produced that will operate in the 1 to 20 Megawatt range at 70 percent efficiency, which is much higher than the efficiencies that can be reached by traditional generation methods within that output range.

The generation of electricity has traditionally been a very polluting, inefficient process. However, with new fuel cell technology, the future of electricity generation is expected to change dramatically in the next ten to twenty years. Research and development into fuel cell technology is ongoing, to ensure that the technology is refined to a level where it is cost-effective for all varieties of electric generation requirements.

The natural gas industry is joined by government agencies and laboratories, private research and development firms, and environmental technology groups in coming up with new technologies that may improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental soundness of the natural gas industry. On a typical motor driven fan mounted on rolling element bearngs, does the natural frequency change when the machine reaches its operating speed?

If the motion of the mode of interest involves tilting of a thin disk, there can be a big difference.

When rotating, the gyroscopic effect increases natural frequency (compared to lump mass at location of the disk).

When stationary (for example lateral bump test), the rotational inertia decreases the natural frequency (compared to lumped mass at location of the disk).

In this case there is no difference for 1st mode, but 2nd mode is 162hz during stationary bump test mode vs 244hz 2nd mode while rotating.

Hmmm. I think that most fans will have most of their mass concentrated at the hub and will not be rotating *that* fast (I am assuming something like a desk fan here).

A fan with all its mass at the hub wouldnt push much air to my way of thinking. The gyroscopic effect is certainly is not relevant for all fans, but on the other hand it is certainly very relevant for many industrial fans (particularly if there is high D/L ratio of fan wheel and assymetrically positiong with respect to the bearings).

The 12 Dec 10 20:05 posted between bearings example was done in 5 minutes to show the principle, but if it would make you feel better I can surely change the parameters to lower the frequency of the 2nd critical near 60hz (let me know if you want to see that).

Attached is an article of a well-studied overhung fan. On the bottom of page 39: youll see:

Most non-rotating vibration problems involve symmetric K and C matrix. In that case the K matrix represents conservative forces (associated with energy storage) and the C matrix represents non-conservative (damping associated with energy dissipation) forces.

In rotating equipment there are a number of scenarios where skew-symmetric components are added to the K and C matrix and the role of these skew symmetric terms is reversed (skew symmetric terms in the K matrix represent non-conservative/damping forces and skew symmetric terms in the C matrix represent conservative forces).

An example of skew symmetric terms in the K matrix would be in a fluid film bearing with cross-coupled stiffness term kxy = -kyx. This can add or remove energy from depending on direction of rotation of the mode compared to the machine.

An example of skew symmetric term in the C matrix would be the gyroscopic terms +/-w*Ip. It represents conservative force because grysoscopic effect represents stored kinetic energy only and therefore cannot possibly add or remove energy from the system. Therefore it is not damping.

Gyroscopic coupled vibration would make for some very interesting experiments. Could be used in vibration isolation to actively change the resonant frequencies ect.

Explaining the Science Behind Augmented Reality

The time has come for devices that keep us in the moment rather than obscuring it. Natural machines, built around the senses we already have, using neuroscience.Meron Gribetz, CEO of Meta, at TED 2016

Gribetz made some bold assertions in his talk at TED2016 painting his vision for the natural machine. Not only did he announce that by one year from now, everyone at Meta will toss their desktop screens and be using natural machines, but Meron also stated his belief that natural machines can begin to replace traditional computers in as little as three years. As a neuroscientist and Metas director of user research, this is unbelievably exciting for me, and represents the crux of our work and mission at Meta.

So what is a natural machine and why does it have the potential to reshape how we work and connect with each other and the world around us? The idea of the natural machine is essentially a computer that fits onto a person and his or her brain and body like a glove to a hand. It enables people to interact with content and with each other in ways that are totally natural. You see something, grab it, manipulate it, hand it to someone else. Sounds simple, right? But think about how we currently use technology. Its anything but natural. We use a keyboard, mouse or a trackball to manipulate data and content on a screen, from our tiny phones to large desktop monitors. But no matter how large the screen, size cant overcome the fundamental flaw. Our brains just werent meant to engage that way. The screens create obstacles to connecting rather than facilitating those connections.

Natural machines provide a fully transparent display that reveals the real world alongside digital content in a beautiful blend of the digital and physical worlds. Viktor Schauberger was critical of modern science for many reasons. At the foundation of his unrest was what he referred to as our mechanistic approach to life. Its true. While science has been able to simulate many of Natures processes with machines, closer inspection reveals that most of these attempts miss the mark. In order to understand life as a step-by step progression of events, scientists study small portions at a time. Each event is broken into tiny parts in order to outline the process. Whole fields of study may develop around a part of a larger process and scientists can spend an entire lifetime with no comprehension of the big picture. What they end up with are the equivalent of two-dimensional pieces to a multi-dimensional puzzleand no way to put the pieces together.  Consequently, an organism is never viewed as a wholenor can it be viewed as a part of the even bigger Web of Life.

Genetic manipulation is a prime example of this mechanistic approach. Although scientists may understand how to remove and to replace genes (as though they were computer chips), genetic manipulation has consequences. Like so many forms of mechanization, genetic modification is an attempt to manipulate and to control Nature. It supports greed, rather than a creative system with a greater purpose. Today, computers and computerized machines practically run our world. Yet, as powerful as our technology has become, it has crippled us in many ways, and it has disconnected us from the Earth. However, we are on the verge of a new way of thinking that will bring us back into harmony with Nature and with the Earth. One thing that will result is a new form of technology based on the natural approach.

Natural technology emulates Nature. It takes into consideration everything we have learned from our machines and our mechanization and then weaves Nature back into the picture. Where water is concerned, natural purification technologies take gravity into account and they consider the way water slowly percolates through multi-layers of rock and soil in the Earth. When it comes to revitalizing water,flow formsandegg-shaped containerswill eventually replace machines that zap and electrocute water to obtain desired results. The WaterRower Oxbridge is hand crafted in solid Cherrywood. Like all woods, Cherrywood may vary in color from a red-brown to deep red. The wood will darken in color with exposure to light. For this reason all WaterRower Cherrywood components are kept in light free rooms to protect from shadowing. A new WaterRower Oxbridge will therefore appear quite light in color. The wood will however darken over time reaching a rich reddish hue. Each machine has been hand finished with three coats of Danish Oil giving a deep lustre an warmth to the wood. Wood has been chosen due to its marvellous engineering properties, primary amongst these is its ability to absorb sound and vibration enhancing the WaterRowers quietness and smoothness of use. Cherrywood, like all woods used in WaterRower construction, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. For reasons of ecology, all our woods are harvested from replenishable forests.
