I live in a jungle where the internet flows like honey, I love sharing 3d printing with strangers as they briskly walk away. Also I run a magical web site where I sell 3d printer stuff.

I sell filament, so I get asked this question a lot! The answer comes down mainly to understand the different properties of plastic and matching those to your project.

Lets start with ABS.(Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styreneas its known by in its hometown) is the grandfather of home FDM filaments.

Print at 210-240º C with a heated bed at 80º C or more.

ABS has a glass transition zone (the temperature that the plastic starts to soften at) of 105º C, and this matters because if you aimed to print something for use in your car, or perhaps a hot-drink coaster you dont want it to start getting soft and drooping, unless youareaiming for a droopy print.

Due to the nature of the plastic, ABS tends to be very easy to print with from a hot-end point of view as in itll extrude beautifully from most hot-ends without fear of jamming or clogging. However its a little more difficult to deal with once it has been extruded, since it loves to shrink as it cools. The shrinkage can cause issues with the part lifting from the bed, or the layers cracking or splitting as the height of the object increases. For this reason its an absolute must to print ABS on a heated bed, and preferably within an enclosed-case printer. At the very least, print in a room thats not too cold and one that is without drafts which might accelerate the cooling and therefore the shrinkage.

ABS can be printed very quickly and is very forgiving of large and/or rapid retraction settings, it resists stringing so very little retraction is usually necessary.

ABS is great for wearables due to its resilience

ABS is a rather strong plastic if printed at sufficient temps to get a great layer bond.

ABS has a decent amount of flex to it and it tends to bend rather than snap when put under pressure.

One of the bigger downsides to printing with ABS is the strong smell while it prints. While it doesnt bother most people, some people may have issues with printing ABS in confined spaces. I would always recommend printing in a well ventilated room no matter what plastic you chose to print with, but I strongly recommend it with ABS. When in doubt, let the fumes out!  Thats an old 3d printers saying from the 1930s. Which is of course I totally made up just now.

Objects that might be dropped, put in hot environments or used in a rough manner are perfect uses for ABS. Think of knife handles, car phone mounts, phone cases, toys, wedding rings (mine is black ABS). In short its very good for most objects.

If you dont have a heated bed, forget about it. If you want to print some large objects and dont have a way of protecting it from breezes or even the ambient air temp, you will fight with splitting and cracking. Avoid ABS if you cannot adequately ventilate the room youre in, the smell might be irritating.

PLA(Polylactic Acidif youre asking for it on the street) is the sweet smelling hippy cousin to ABS IT BIODEGRADES AND SMELLS LIKE CANDY WHEN YOU PRINT! If that fact alone doesnt interest you, then read on.

Print at 180 200º C and while you can print without a heated bed, I recommend one running at 60º C

PLAs glass transition temp is probably its biggest downside and at only 60ishº (yes thats a scientific value) it limits how you can use this plastic. Forget about making a gear-shift knob for your car, unless you like shifting with a gummy bear Which is actually an awesome idea.

In almost the complete opposite to ABS, PLA users sometimes have difficulties with jamming in the hot-end (especially all-metal hot end users) due to the sticky and expanding nature of PLA as it melts. This doesnt mean you should shy away from printing with it, just a drop of oil added to almost any hot-end when you put a roll on will give you smooth, jam-free, jam-smelling prints till the cows come home.

The real joy with PLA comes as it lays on the print bed. With almost no shrinkage, you can print massive prints in open framed printers with little fear of lifting from the bed, warping or cracking, its a great filament to use when showing off your printer in a public setting.

PLA is no problem for outdoor projects

While you can still print incredibly strong objects with PLA, it tends to be a little more brittle than other plastics. Rather than bouncing when dropped or struck, some printed parts may just shatter or chip. Thin parts are more likely to snap than bend very far.

Layer bond is very strong if printed appropriately.

Im not advocating the deliberate inhalation of PLA fumes at all (Im sure theres a lawsuit there somewhere), however if you do happen to catch a whiff of PLA as it prints, I think youll be pleasantly surprised. A day of printing in PLA makes my office smell lovely and kind of makes me hungry. The fumes are minor, and they smell good!

Personally I recommend using it whenever you can. Its a bioplastic that can be recycled or composted. Its perfect for boxes, gifts, models, prototype parts. Oh and dont be afraid of using it outdoors, while it does biodegrade, it does need a heated composting setup and its insoluble in water, so make a PLA garden gnome right now!

PLA comes in nice transparent options, the choice is clear

If youre making something that needs to hold up in 60º (C) temperatures avoid PLA, it will start sagging at this temperature. Due to its brittle nature it isnt recommended for tool handles or parts that will be dropped repeatedly, also parts that have very thin portions will break after bending slightly.

Its worthwhile learning to use both materials since both ABS and PLA have ideal use situations. Myself, I try to use PLA at every opportunity due to its biodegradable qualities, ease of printing and sweet smells 🙂 but ABS is just the ticket for higher impact or higher temperature jobs.

Apart from that, because clear PLA filament is made from natural materials, it is biodegradable. This means that you can easily dispose it and it will break down naturally in around 3 to 6 months. In comparison to other filament types, those petroleum-based materials will take a thousand years to decompose.

If you are having some problems with your material, adjust the temperature accordingly. You can go higher or lower at 5C increments until such time that you get to the right temperature setting.

If you begin to notice that there is some stringing happening when the printer moves between thevarious parts of the project, this is because the material loses a lot of itsviscositybecause of too much heat. What happens is that thefilamentPLA leaks from the print nozzle while it moves. When this happens, adjust the temperature to a lower setting.

If you observe that the material is beginning to have some problems adhering to the first layers or to the print surface, then the temperature may have been set a little too low. This might cause missing layers, holes, and gaps.

You should also take note that themelting point of PLA filamentsis low at around 170C and up. It may not be recommended for objects that you will be using at higher temperatures. But objects that have been printed using PLA filaments will do just fine if placed in a normal setting at room temperature.

When it comes to 3D printing, it is vital that youprint at the correct temperatureif you want to ensure that the printing goes smoothly. One thing you will observe with high-quality PLA filaments is that they print at temperatures that are lower than the usual.

This is because the resin is pure and there is little to no contaminants. You can compare PLA vs. ABS vs. PETG and you will find that PLA is very easy to use and produces great parts compared to the two. With PLA filaments, you dont have to worry about shrinkage or warping.

You can print using PLA filaments even without a heated bed. However, we still recommend that for the first layers to adhere, have the bed heated to around 40C to 50C.

PLA filaments are hygroscopic, just like other thermoplastics. What this means is that over a certain period, it will begin absorbing water from the air surrounding it.

When this happens, the PLA breaks down, or the molecular chains that are holding it together become altered. Printing with PLA filaments that have absorbed water will make it difficult for the layers to bind with each other.

Those parts that do bind will have the tendency to be distorted. That is why you have to be mindful of how you will store your PLA filaments when you are not using it for printing.

This type of filament offers a number of advantages over the other 3D printing materials. Here are some of the reasons why this is one of the favorite filaments in the market.

A good quality PLA filament will have a nice flow, and it will not warp.

The details of the final products are neat.

You dont have to worry about it blobbing or stringing.

The final product is easy to cut, drill, or sand.

PLA filaments are easily pigmented, so the colors are vivid.

Compared to other filaments, this one doesnt smell bad.

The print temperature that you will be using is much lower compared to other filaments.

You can use it without a heated bed

Not as heat tolerant as ABS filaments.

Prints will start to deform at 60C

If you are using the right PLA filament, then you should observe the following:

It does not emit a lot of ultra fines particles

Extrusion temperature may vary between 160 and 220 C.

Parts printed with PLA have a slightly glossy finish

It requires a bit more force to be extruded due to higher coefficient of friction

If you ever get your hands on those bad quality ones, dont assumeall kinds of PLA filamentare the same. PLA filaments are great for experimenting with 3D printing.

You dont immediately have to shift to other filaments such as the PETG or ABS. You can do that if you feel that your prints are becoming more and more advanced.

I suggest that you stick and use PLA filaments until such time that you feel that you are ready to dive into experimenting with other types of filaments.  PLA is flexible and versatile. It can do the job well.
