At 3D Universe, we are now offering a new, high-end 3D printing PLA filament. The complete filament line is available in an assortment of 16 different colors. Weve had this in the works for a while, now, so were very excited – to say the least!

3D Universe PLA is made from Polylactic Acid, a plant-based thermoplastic which is 100% biodegradable. While not food safe, it is non-toxic. For most people that are new to 3D Printing, its highly recommended to start printing with PLA before moving on to more exotic materials.

Having close to 30 years of experience manufacturing a very diverse array of plastics, our manufacturer has the process knowledge required to produce high-end filaments. Our PLA has a diameter tolerances of +/- 0.08 mm, which ensures a consistent flow rate. The filament is tightly wound to guard against tangling and each spool is shipped in air-tight packaging to shield against the elements.

There is some confusion surrounding 2.85 mm vs 3.0 mm filament. The truth is, most filament labeled as 3.0 mm is actuallycloserto 2.85 mm in diameter – with very rare exceptions. 3D Universe filament istruly2.85 mm in diameter, with a tolerance of +/- .08 mm. Therefore, it works exceptionally well inUltimakerprinters, as well as printers that require 3 mm filament, such as theLulzBot TAZ or Mini. Simply configure your slicing software for a filament diameter of 2.85 mm and you can expect optimal results.

Theres expensive filament and theres cheap filament then theres FoxSmart filament.Our plastic is just as good as the expensive plastic, but FAR less expensive. Tested and tested and tested (by us + 3rd party testing labs), it is consistent, dry as a bone and works with all the major printers.

Why FoxSmart™ filament, you may ask? Here are some facts that might (should) matter to you:

• Our factory has beenmaking filament longer than just about any modern 3D filament extruder in the world. Theyve been extruding filaments since 2007, long before most others got into the market.

• Filaments are tested not oncenot twicebut4 timesin-line during extrusion with 4 separatelaser calipers, ensuring precise, controlled diameters once spooled.

• Spooled filament isimmediately vacuumed sealedwith desiccant once spooling is complete. By immediately we mean it comes off the production line and is vacuumed sealed within 10 seconds. Yep.

• Raw PLA pellets areUSA madeusing virgin Natureworks product. No extrusion waste is ever reconstituted into new pellets for production. Waste extruded plastics are sold to the local market for use in injection plastic product.

• Pellets are heated to0% humiditybefore extrusion. This should be a given with all factories, but you would be surprised how many fail this test.

• We dont take chances. If the laser caliper chirps an alarm (meaning the filament is off-spec of .05mm) the extrusion run is pulled and sold off as waste. We then start over from scratch. This ensures absoluteconsistency between all batchesof filament.

• Each extrusion batch runs for roughly 30 minutes before we start spooling. Why? Because thats how long it takes to get the diameter perfect. Crafting premium filament is an art, not an exact science. Our team is very, very goodwhich is why they take their time with each run, ensuring the extrusion run is perfect before we spool rolls.

• We print in-house on 3 different printer brands. If your printer doesnt suck, it will like FoxSmart filament. Even if it does suck, it mightsuck lesswith premium quality filament. Help your printer suck lessgive it what it wants.

Great filament. I have printed lots with my Printrbot Simple Metal and this filament and it always works great! Only downside: it wont fit on the default spool holder so I had to print another one.

Great filament for the price! I have bought multiple spools in different colors and they are nice and vibrant. I havent run into any print problems with Foxsmart pla.

Ive printed with the clear and the gold on my Duplicator i3. Gold looks amazing and prints nicely at about 226C, the clear does best around 216. Very happy with both spools.

I have used multiple brands of filament in my Robo 3D R1Plus and Foxsmart has been the most consistent by far. I have used 8 rolls without any issues outside of my own CAD mistakes.

I bought three rolls of this PLA. Figured that, at $16, if it sucked, I could always repurpose it as bludgeon of some kind.

It worked. Very well, even. Very consistent prints from this stuff. At least the white and red. Havent tried the blue yet, but Im optimistic.

Only con is, I need to find another option for a bludgeon.

I have used many brands of PLA, but this stuff just prints the best and you get it at a great price which cant be beat. This easily out preforms other brands that are twice as expensive. I am running two Robo 3D R1s and this stuff just works.

Ive run 5+ kilos through my Printrbot Play, not problem. Their translucent filaments are very interesting, especially for extremely thin/thick prints. Wonderful supplier; had no problems with filament thickness. Some colors require different bed/extruder temps, but thats to be expected.

Ive been using Foxsmart PLA since it was featured on Fabbaloo at the end of 2014 (when there were only a few colors available). It really is amazing stuff, especially at the price.

I was just contemplating trying a fancy new filament that uses a resin specifically formulated for 3D printing. It sounds like a nice material, but when I saw the price 4.5x the price of Foxsmart PLA I had second thoughts. How could I justify spending that much, when this PLA is so good?

My only very minor gripe (not enough of one to stop me giving it 5-stars) is the diameter of the center of the spool is too small. This causes the last few meters of filament to be deformed in to such a tight spiral that its impossible to use. Having said that, when the filament is so fairly priced, discarding a few meters doesnt change it being the best value filament out there.

Filament is awesome on my raise3d N2 Plus. Set nozzle temp to 226 and heatbed anywhere from 80-100. Prints perfect everytime.

prints like a dream. The layers are smooth and it print beautifully. Love the price point. This is my new goto filament for my CTC 3d printer. I am printing at 220 (thats a little hot but it lays out the layers very nice) i use a print speed of 60 (i can go faster but it seems with this filament 60 prints high details)

I was expecting OK results from a $16/kg filament, but have been consistently pleased at how FoxSmarts PLA compares with much more expensive filaments. Adhesion and strength have been great for me (I print a bit on the hot side, at 220deg C) I would highly recommend, especially if you do a lot of experimental prints and want to avoid burning a hole in your wallet!

FoxSmart offers PLA in a good choice of vibrant colors. The filament is just as good as the more expensive brands, so you can get a lot more for less money. Their translucent colors are unique and the print quality is consistent from spool to spool. Ive been using FoxSmart PLA for about two years now and have sampled many of their colors.

Wow. I cant believe the value of this PLA! Ive used the pink for several prints and Ive yet to have even a hint of any issues. This rivals anything Ive used so far and the prices cant be beat. I bought some purple and I really look forward to using it!

I was a bit skeptical of the filament because of how great the price is, but after purchasing a couple rolls, I am getting ready to place another order. The shipping was only a couple days and the translucent colors are unique. The filament prints very nice on my QIDI printer, and I ahve yet to find any issues with the filament.

Good filament but the spool is too small ID, so the last 100 or so grams of filament is nearly unuseable. Other than that, it adheres well to unheated blue tape, prints relatively cool, is dry and stays dry, and layer adhesion is good too.

This stuffs always been good stuff. Ive got rolls and rolls of the stuff. Pretty consistent stuff between colors, too. Set up for yellow, switch to black and keep the same settings. Great stuff.

Always gets shipped quickly, too. Always had a great experience with these guys.

One downside: The red is more of an orange-red. More orange than red, really.

I just got 5 spools of PLA in the mail. White, Black, Green, Yellow, Red. They are all true to color except the red. It is not a true red at all, its more of an orange. Next to a different fluorescent orange roll I have its almost indistinguishable. Other than that a great product. Its been printing well with no clogs and it all looks nice and shiny. I print at 200 degrees just like all PLA. I have so many colors now I had to built a rack to hold them all.

Its ok. Like someone else said, the red is actually orange, not red. There seems to be some variation in the quality and other things by color, the yellow PLA consumes moisture and is completely unuseable after being in the bag in the box with the dessicant it came with (unsealed, obviously) for only two or three weeks, while the black has been in open air for longer and still prints fine, no breaking. Find a color that works well, and stick to it. Black is a solid color. I like the black. I do not like the green, yellow, or red.

Its $16. If youre going to use the spool up fast, 1 month, youll be fine.

Both materials are thermoplastics that become malleable when exposed to high temperatures and keep their new shape when cooled down. They are also the only materials a 3D printer that uses fused deposition modeling technology is able to process.

The process used for printing with either material is similar. Both materials are affordable, readily available, and are able to be used in most inexpensive 3D printers. At first glance it might seem like they are both the same, but in reality, ABS and PLA have very different properties and are suited for different applications.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is a very common material that has been used for decades to make many things, including drain-waste-vent (DWV) pipes, golf clubs, automotive body parts, golf club heads, and toys. In 3D printing, ABS has been a popular plastic material from the start. It consistently melts at around 225 degrees Celsius, which is easily achieved with most home printers. It is slightly flexible and has a fairly high glass transition temperature (the temperature which causes a plastic to go from its solid state to a pliable consistency where it begins to lose its shape) of approximately 100 degrees.

ABS can also be dissolved in acetone, which is sometimes used to create a smooth finish on a 3D print. When an ABS print is sanded and then wiped with acetone, the outer layer is dissolved, which reduces the visibility of layers. This technique is used to give naturally matte ABS prints a smooth, high-gloss finish.

ABS filament produces fumes as it is being heated. These fumes carry an unpleasant odor and may also be toxic. Melting ABS is suspected to carry health risks for individuals who work around it, and those who have been exposed to fumes commonly report headaches and nausea. Once the piece is cooled, however, it is completely safe to handle.

Another downside to using ABS filament is its tendency to warp. ABS expands and shrinks as it is heated and cooled down again. When ABS prints are cooled too quickly, they can easily curl up and warp. To combat this effect, ABS needs to be printed on top of a heated build plate, preferably in an enclosed build chamber, so that it remains warm during the printing process and can cool slowly when printing is finished.

PLA filaments are among the least expensive materials available for 3D printing, though ABS filaments only cost slightly more. PLA filaments that have been blended with other materials can also be much more expensive than basic ABS.
